A couple of local projects are working to fight cancer this year.
In St. Marys on Saturday, Feb. 2 and again on Feb. 23, you can Save a Breast and Buy a Dress. Save on a dress flyer2013FinalThere will be a sale of slightly used prom dresses at 3845 G50 Hwy., St. Charles, just one mile south of St. Marys. Other formal dresses, as well as shoes, purses, accessories and a selection of name brand jeans will be available as well. Last year, there were more than 200 dresses to choose from.
Proceeds from the sale will to go to the campaign of Iowa eMPoWeRing Pink team in the three-day Susan G. Koman walk in Minnesota, said Jolene Gehringer, one of the organizers of the dress event.The sale goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you have questions, call Becki at 515-240-6517.
Meanwhile, in Pleasantville, the Pleasantville High School Student Council and coaching staff will host a Coaches for Cancer game on Feb. 5 against Southeast Warren.
Before the game, there will be a freewill donation pulled pork dinner, and a silent auction with goodie baskets donated from businesses. The student council will sell pink coaches vs. cancer T-shirts.
During the game, fans can pledge $1 per free throw made in the game, and $3 per 3-pointer made in the game and purchase ribbons showing support for cancer research.
The first game starts at 6:15 p.m., with the dinner and silent auction taking place beforehand. Proceeds will be sent to the American Cancer Society.
