It seems like every new activity a child takes up is a new education for the parents as well. While Elizabeth has danced since she was 3, Saturday was our first outing into the world of competitive dance as she and five of her teammates took their show on the road to the 2014 State Iowa Dance Championships solo competition in Newton.
It was no “Dance Moms.”
More than 600 dancers in six classes, plus big and small school color guards, showed off their solos. For the most part, the girls chose their own music, choreographed their own routines and dug up their own costumes.
The parents sat in amazement to realize that THIS is what all the hours of work created.
The kids were amazing, with a wide variety of songs, moves, styles and, of course, skills.
Three of Indianola’s six dancers earned Division 1 ratings, along with several Norwalk dancers. Miz Spitzer of Carlisle was second overall in Class IV dance.
You’ll have more chances to see the skilled dancers from Warren County when Norwalk holds their annual Rock on to State event at the high school on Saturday, Nov. 23, and then again at the state team competition in Des Moines on Dec. 5 and 6.
Most of the time, the dance team is the entertainment during half-time or a break in the action on the field. This is their time to shine, and it’s cool to see them all shining brightly.
