I’m not a state fair person. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been to the state fair. The kids go with friends, Mark occasionally enjoys a concert with his band friends. Me, I savor the state fair vicariously, through my email.
Almost the minute the fair opens, the emails start to pour in. Buffalo Center Boar claims Iowa State Fair Crown. Des Moines Baker takes the cake. Cumming cook Iowa State Fair fruit butters title. Now, about halfway through the fair, I have literally hundreds of emails detailing the results of competitions from vegan cooking to knitting to livestock shows.
I know that Emma Whitlock and Marjorie Rodgers are doing well in the baking categories, that Hattie McConnell of Indianola has moved on in the State Fair talent search and that Brandon Reynolds of Indianola showed the champion Charolais heifer.
An it’s not just in words.
I have pictures of Sam Alexander of Indianola riding the zip line and Megan Henry, also of Indianola, singing the national anthem. We see youthful county residents enjoying the Little Hands on the Farm displays and older residents taking part in wine shows and beer displays.
Over the next week or so, you’ll start to see the results of the various competitions in the paper, as well as photos of local residents taking the fair in. It’s my connection to the fair, and even via email, nothing compares!
